Planning your launch in the United Kingdom

Work through collection, delivery and checkout in GBP

Plan your restaurant’s own ordering website, apps and counter workflows in pounds sterling. The location ladder works for a single takeaway or a growing restaurant group, with the same included apps at every size.

Online payment authentication

Confirm your payment account and test the Stripe authentication flow used by your customers, including a challenged payment and a refund. Gateway integration does not guarantee approval for every merchant or payment method.

Collection and delivery areas

Use your actual postcodes and delivery boundaries during the demo. Check collection slots, minimum order values and delivery charges against how your restaurant operates.

VAT and menu information

Bring your VAT receipt requirements and the menu information you need to present, including allergen wording. Review the configured customer journey and receipts with your advisers before launch.

VAT on restaurant and takeaway food in the United Kingdom

HMRC treats food eaten on the premises and hot takeaway food as standard-rated at 20%, while cold takeaway food is zero-rated unless it is a type that is always standard-rated, such as crisps, sweets or some drinks. The same cold sandwich is therefore 20% eaten in and 0% taken away.

VAT rates on food in the United Kingdom
What is sold Rate
Food and drink eaten on the premises 20%
Hot takeaway and delivered food 20%
Cold takeaway food 0%
Alcoholic and soft drinks 20%

Eat-in and takeaway take different rates here. Bring a dine-in order and a takeaway order to the demo and confirm how both rates will be configured and printed on receipts before you launch.

Rates as published by HM Revenue & Customs, checked . This is general information, not tax advice; your accountant confirms the treatment of your menu, and the Supaorder subscription does not set it.

Before you go live

A restaurant launch checklist for the United Kingdom

Six things to settle at the demo and test before the first live order, drawn from how customers in the United Kingdom pay, order and expect to be kept informed.

  1. Run one order end to end on each live payment path (Stripe, Stripe Terminal, Cash, card on delivery, card terminal) — success, decline and refund.

  2. Name the on-request integrations your customers expect at the demo — Open banking (pay by bank), Stuart — so the quote carries their scope and timeline.

  3. Enable the storefront languages customers need (English) with reviewed translations.

  4. Route order updates where customers read them (SMS and email) and send a test message before launch.

  5. Decide the delivery model — Uber Direct, Stuart, Shipday, Google Maps — and test a real address, a delivery zone edge and a cash-on-delivery reconciliation.

  6. Bring your receipt and tax requirements to the demo; the subscription does not set them. Position against Deliveroo, Just Eat and Uber Eats with your own channel’s zero commission.
